Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme Scheme

PMEGP Subsidy – Clear and Easy-to-Understand Guide

Under the PMEGP (Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme), the subsidy amount varies based on the location of the project and the category of the applicant.

What is a PMEGP Loan?

Category Rural Area Subsidy (%) Urban Area Subsidy (%)
General Category 25% 15%
Special Categories (SC/ ST/ OBC/ Minority/ Women/ Differently-abled) 35% 25%

How the Subsidy Process Works

  • Once the loan is sanctioned, the concerned bank submits a claim for subsidy through the online system within 15 days.
  • Within the next 15 days, the subsidy amount is credited directly to the bank.
  • Therefore, after loan disbursement, it is essential to monitor the progress of the subsidy.
  • If there are technical errors in the process, the bank will contact you – it is important to make the necessary corrections immediately

Type of Subsidy – Back-Ended Subsidy

The subsidy under PMEGP is back-ended, which means:

  • The subsidy amount is not immediately deducted from your EMIs.
  • It is adjusted only after you repay an equivalent amount of the loan to the bank.
  • Only then is the subsidy considered utilized, and the remaining loan is recalculated accordingly.

Lock-In Period of 3 Years

  • The subsidy amount remains locked for a minimum of 3 years.
  • During this period, the loan must remain active.
  • If the loan is closed early or becomes non-performing (NPA) within this period, the subsidy amount can be forfeited by the bank.

Interest and Loan Monitoring

  • No interest is charged on the subsidy amount.
  • However, the remaining loan must be repaid with interest as per the repayment schedule.
  • It is advisable to regularly monitor your loan account and keep track of the interest payments.

Risk of Legal Action

  • If the loan becomes non-performing (NPA) within 3 years, the subsidy will be forfeited, and the bank may initiate legal recovery procedures for the outstanding loan.
  • If the required documents are not submitted on time or there are delays in the process, the subsidy claim may be rejected.
  • Therefore, it is crucial to understand the technical aspects of the scheme and consult an expert if needed.

Implementing Agencies – Who Runs the PMEGP Scheme?

The PMEGP scheme is implemented primarily through two official agencies:

  1. Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC)
  2. District Industries Centres (DIC)

This centrally sponsored scheme aims to encourage entrepreneurship across the country. Based on your project sector and area, your application will be forwarded through either KVIC or DIC.

How to Apply

  • Applicants must apply online through the official PMEGP portal.
  • After submitting the application, the relevant department conducts an interview, followed by eligibility verification.

If there are errors in the application or if required steps are not completed on time, the application may be rejected.

Hence, getting the right information at every stage and seeking expert advice is extremely important to successfully avail the benefits of the PMEGP scheme.
